ADVANTAGES OF GROUP MUSIC LESSONS

  • Improved motivation to practice. A good stepping-stone to private lessons in the future. The environment of our group music or dance classes is non-competitive. With positive peer pressure, students are inspired to learn and practice more frequently at home. This enables a student to learn good practice habits and responsibility — a precursor to private music lessons and other life skills.
  • Boosted teamwork skills & confidence. Students in group music classes must work together to reach concrete goals, such as an end-of-term performance. This promotes team building skills and builds confidence.
  • Increased socialization and sense of community. With the pandemic, socialization has been very limited. We are excited to safely bring back group lessons with smaller group sizes. In group classes, students can meet new friends with similar interests and form new social circles. This motivates a student to continue studying and practicing their instruments & dance routines.
  • Reduced risk of stage fright. Practicing in front of peers in group settings can empower students, boost confidence and help students overcome stage fright! From experience as educators, we can speak to this from our own participation in group activities. What a rush of happiness and pride it is when we all bow together at the end of a performance to an applauding crowd. And, hey! Our groups will absolutely get to experience all of this in June, at our end-of-term concert!

But what if I’m already in private lessons?
If you are already enrolled in private lessons, good on you! We also encourage you to join a group activity to learn important team building skills. After all, a musician or dancer does not necessarily always perform alone on stage (how odd would that be for a lead guitarist to have no backing?) — they must have the skills to adapt to playing solo and playing in a group.

Parents, if you have any questions as to whether you feel your child is ready for a group class, please let us know. There is much evidence and ongoing research on the benefits of music, dance and the arts in the lives of young children. In the words of Plato, “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.”
